This year 2012 the United Kingdom & Commonwealth will be marking sixty years of the Queen's reign the Diamond Jubilee. The celebrations will centre on an extended weekend on 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th June. People from all over the world will be holding all types of special events to mark the occasion from street parties to Royal variety performances it will be a time of great Joy for many, a year of Jubilee!
Queen Elizabeth came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 & her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. & now in 2012 (60 years) she celebrates her diamond Jubilee. The Queen has become the second longest serving monarch, secondly only to queen Victoria who reigned 63 years.
I would like to take this opportunity to write about another Monarch, the King of Kings, & another Jubilee. Lit The English word jubilee comes from the Hebrew word yobel meaning a trumpet or ram’s horn. These rams’ horns were blown on the Day of Atonement to announce the start of the year of jubilee. In the year of Jubilee it was a time when all land was given back to its rightful owners, when all debts were written off, also with money you owed. A time when all slaves, were to be set free, this Jubilee was to come to pass every 50 years. (Bible ref; Leviticus; 25:8- 55).
This means at least once in your lifetime the slate could be wiped clean & you could start again with a fresh start. It also prevented others from a massing wealth, & the poor remaining poor, it directed the attentions of the people upon God, rather than upon a massing wealth for oneself & heirs.
Maybe you think a program like this would ruin today’s economy; perhaps even destroy our way of life. That’s right, and that’s just the point. Our way of life was never intended by God. He never wanted us to experience the stress, anxiety, disappointment, and downright fear that is so prevalent in people’s lives today as they struggle to either get or keep more of “the finer things of life.” He never intended for us to become so preoccupied by material wealth and comfort that we lost sight of Him; to be so focused on the transitory treasure of this world that we would actually be willing to forfeit the permanent wealth of the next one. A New Testament teaching Jesus warned us about (Bible ref; Matthew 6:19-21).
Far greater than the Jubilee that Isreal was called to implement is found in the person & work of Jesus, during his earthly ministry whilst in the synagogue at Nazareth he read from the scroll of Isaiah 750 BC ; the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound to proclaim the year of the Lords favour. (Isaiah 61:1-2a, Luke 4:18).
Jesus here is referring to himself as its fulfilment, this is a prophetic declaration pointing to Himself as another type of Jubilee declaring, the year of the Lords Favour. In short Jesus is making it clear that it is now possible for people to obtain spiritual freedom from Satan’s slavery & release from captivity of their debts, which they have incurred because of sin. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23). This Jubilee was all made possible through his atoning death upon the cross & His resurrection from the dead, through repentance and faith, sinners can become beneficiaries of this spiritual jubilee!
Finally the year of the Lords Jubilee as a future fulfilment, is also yet to come, to this earth , just like our Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee, is coming one day soon, Jesus Christ will return, with the blast of the rams horn, announcing the Jubilee, this planet Earth will be relinquished by humanity, all wrongs will be put right, all tears will be wiped away, there will be no more suffering & death & this earth will revert to its original owner, the one who created it, God Himself, we are merely tenants. So when you pray, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,” you’re really praying for that final and ultimate Jubilee year to come.
